REsults...

1. I have been on tour with the Fun Lovin Criminals
True. Say no more.

2. My stepmother won the Dublin marathon
True. 1995, in 2.40 mins, holy crap. She ran for England at the time.... google it, she is called Linda Rushmere

3. My Grandfather escaped prisoner of war camp and walked the entire length of Italy
True. He used the propaganda paper dropped from the planes as loo roll. He was also shot through his neck and married three times.

4. I trekked through the Brunei jungle in flipflops
True. Flipflops and no insect repellant. What a berk. Couldn't stand still for a second as my feet would be covered with ants and all sorts of other horrible insects.

5. I composed a song with Norman Lamont in the houses of parliament
True. Well my language here is a little on the creative side, but when I was about six, on a school trip there, he started singing when we came down the corridor and he and I then devised a ditty of words about our red school uniforms to go along with it.

6. I have recorded a single
True. Tragic. A long time ago - it is a dance hybrid/ dido esque mess. And nobody is ever listening to it. EVER.

7. I have a tattoo
True.

8. I guest presented on a holiday TV show in the UK
True. My friend and I were approached to present a show about a barge holiday, we got a free week on a barge.... it is cringeworthy. I spend some time waffling about the ingenious storage space.

9. My ex boss is a well known Jazz singer
LIE. She was a singer, and of Jazz, but certainly NOT well known.

10. My relatives are direct descendants of Anne Boleyn
True, ridiculously. The cornish relatives on my mothers side did a family tree a long time back. Scary.

Sign the petition!

The National Campaign for the Arts petitions to ensure that the arts are on local and national government agendas and welcomes an open debate on the arts as a vital part of contemporary Irish life.

We all know how fundamentally important the arts sector is to every aspect of our lives. And even more so given the current economical climate. Time is ticking away with the Budget coming up on December 9. There are many ways you can support the National Campaign for the Arts including meeting your local politicians and joining your local arts worker group but one of the quickest and easiest things you can do is to sign the petition. We need 10,000 signatures by Friday 27 November and we will then deliver them to Minister Martin Cullen. We're not there yet - can you help us spread the word? Please sign the petition and please forward this message. Cheers. Below is the link for this petition, the national campaign for the arts, against the detrimental cutbacks.

Pearl Jam - Unthought known

Am loving the new Pearl Jam album. Eddie V is an old love and my how he improves with age - think the below is the song of the album.

Unthought known

All the thoughts,... You never see,... You’re always thinking,...Brain is wired,... Brain is deep,... Oh are you sinking?,...
Feel the path of every day,... Which road you taking?,...Breathing hard,... & Making hay,... Yeh this is living,...
Look for love & evidence,... That you’re worth keeping,...Swallowed whole in negatives,... It's so sad & sickening,...
Feel the air up above,... A pool of blue sky,...Fill the air up with love,... Black with starlight,...
Feel the sky blanket you,... with gems & rhinestones,...See the path cut by the moon,... For you to walk on,...For you to walk on,...
Nothing left,... Nothing left,...Nothing there,... Nothing left,...
See the path cut by the moon,... For you to walk on,...See the waves on distant shores,... Awaiting your arrival,...
Dream the dreams of other men,... You’ll be no ones rival,...Dream the dreams of others then,... You will be no ones rival,...You will be no ones rival,...
A distant time,... A distant space,... That’s where we’re living ..A distant time,... A distant place,... So what you giving?,...What you giving?

Dogsaid/Nighthawks

A friend of mine found a beautiful abandoned collie X the other day. He followed her home. She can't keep him as she has a dog already. She was heartbroken and didn't know what to do. She knew I had got myself in a spot of rescuing bother before... I recommended 'paws' which is the place that helped me enormously and who have the reassuring policy of never putting an animal to sleep. Paws have since moved to Tipperary, but she found this place:

So we drove to Bally mun yesterday, you turn just after the travel lodge, into a housing area (I was thinking this can't be right) but we had our directions which literally took us into what looked like a semi-derelict flat block. I was getting dodgy vibes, but everyone was smiling. Someone had painted the letters VET on the wall and her blue rescue van was outside. There were flowers all over the concrete, apparently remembering when a fourteen year old girl fell from the block before to her death.

So these amazing women run this centre, completely on donation and they never put a dog down. I was humbled and am so glad that the lovely little boy (nicknamed Londis as that is where he was found) will find a really good new home. Londis didn't want to get out of my car and we both felt an emotional pang, but I know he will be well looked after there.

So onto lighter topics, Nighthawks are doing a gig next Tuesday in aid of concern. Be there or be VERY square.

Nighthawks at the Project Arts Centre(in aid of CONCERN)

Tuesday, 27th October, 2009
Project Arts Centre39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Artists as below:
Vyvienne Long (Solo)
Vyvienne Long first came to prominence a few years ago as the cellist in Damien Rice’s band. Then, in 2006, Vyvienne released her wonderful debut EP, entitled Birdtalk, and it quickly became obvious that she was a hugely talented singer-songwriter in her own right. Vyvienne is also a wonderful live performer, and, not surprisingly, she has sold out venues all over Ireland. Vyvienne is currently putting the finishing touches to her debut album, and her recent single ‘Happy Thoughts’ has enjoyed extensive radio play (and, yes, it’s used in that TV advert too!).

Pony Club
Put simply – Pony Club are one of the best bands Ireland has ever produced. (If you don’t believe us, then check with Morrissey, because that’s his opinion too.) In the last decade Pony Club have released three brilliant albums – Post Romantic, Family Business and Home Truths – and we would strongly encourage you to buy every single one of them – twice. Pony Club are definitely one of the most popular acts that we’ve ever had at Nighthawks, and it’s great to welcome them back for this show.

Foil Arms and Hog
In the last year the Nighthawks people have spent more than their fair share of time in Dublin comedy clubs, and we can honestly say that Foil Arms and Hog are the best comedy sketch group that we have come across in this city. They consist of Sean Finegan, Sean Flanagan and Conor McKenna; and they are guaranteed to make you laugh. They have just returned from a month of sell-out shows at the Edinburgh International Festival, and they were perfectly summed up recently, by Damo Clarke from RTE, when he confessed – “Foil Arms and Hog are the best threesome I’ve ever had.”

Jade Strings and Helene Hutchinson
Jade Strings are Aisling Ennis (harp) and Jenny Dowdall (cello), and they are regularly joined by the sweet voice of Helene Hutchinson. They play an exciting mix of classical, jazz and opera, and they recently released their debut album with a fantastic concert at the National Gallery in Dublin. This is one act not to be missed. They are the touch of class that we’ve been waiting for.
‘Lennon v McCartney’(A Short Play)
Since the dawn of time human beings have gathered in pubs and argued about who is greater – John Lennon or Paul McCartney. Now, finally, here at last (and not a moment too soon), is a short play that definitively sorts out the argument once and for all. Well… sort of. ‘Lennon v McCartney’ is written and directed by Stephen Kennedy, and performed by Robbie O’Connor and Seamus Brennan. This short play has recently been selected for performance at Beatle Week 2010 in Liverpool.
Tango Performance
Simona Zaino and Leslie Handelman (with music by Javier Criado)Simona Zaino is originally from Italy, but has lived in Dublin for over a decade. She has been teaching tango since 2004, and has even danced with the great Pablo Veron (you may remember him from the film The Tango Lesson). Simona’s dance partner at Nighthawks will be Leslie Handelman. Leslie somehow came to tango nine years ago via Tai Chi, and since then he has danced all over the world, and is frequently seen in the tango clubs of New York. And we are delighted to announce that live music on the night will come from Javier Criado. Javier is a gifted tango guitarist and singer from Spain. He has performed solo at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, and played at countless tango venues in his home country. A combination of Javier, Leslie and Simona is certain to produce something very special.

Colm Keegan (Poetry)
Colm Keegan is a poet, a short story writer, a screenwriter and a novelist. He is also the seventh son of a seventh son and plays a mean symphony on the spoons. Colm has been short-listed for the Sunday Tribune’s Hennessy X.O Literary Awards on three separate occasions – so it’s about time he won it! Colm has just completed a hectic summer, performing at festivals up and down the country, and there’ll be no living with him now that he’s conquered the Electric Picnic.
Enda Muldoon (Stand-Up Comedy)
OK, let’s be honest about this, Enda Muldoon is probably insane; but he’s insane in a good way. A funny, insightful way. Basically, when Enda Muldoon does stand-up comedy you just cannot look away. The man has courage. The man has truth. The man has two bottles of Budweiser and a song about polar bears. Furthermore, Enda was recently a finalist in the prestigious Bulmers Comedy Competition at the Laughter Lounge in Dublin. Best of all, though, is the fact that Enda’s PR ends with the line – “The race to the bottom is over – come and see the winner!”
Graham Dowling(Stand-Up Comedy)
Graham Dowling insists that he is completely unsuited to stand-up comedy, despite the fact that he was a former finalist in the Bulmers Comedy Competition mentioned above. In fairness to Graham, he has genuinely tried to quit comedy many times, but feckers like us just keep dragging him out of retirement for ‘one last job’. So please, ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for Graham's last ever gig (again)…

Damon Blake(Stand-Up Comedy)
Damon Blake is one of the most intelligent and insightful stand-up comics currently working the Irish ‘circuit’. He has performed all over Ireland, and, in 2008, he had a very successful show at the Edinburgh International Festival. At present Damon is working on ‘Apartment Red’ – a popular weekly series of comic sketches for RTE’s The Den. Damon is funny and Damon is hip. Damon is heading to the top – so catch him now.

‘The Money Chair’(A Short Play)
This short piece examines exactly what can happen when torture goes badly wrong! It is written and directed by Stephen Kennedy, and performed by Padraic McGinley, Enda Muldoon and Damon Blake. Be careful where you sit in the auditorium!

The show starts at 8pm. It ends at 10.30pm (approx).
There will be one interval of 15 minutes.

Birthdays

I have a milestone birthday coming up TOO soon. I decided to have a party. Come Saturday I am sure I will be jumping around in my sequins to the House of Pain, eighteen vodkas later, but today I would rather crawl under a rock and ensure that nobody on earth knew it was my birthday EVER again. (So I tell all of you, note the contradiction there, well, maybe all two of you who read my drivel.)

I am not trying to be a knob of knobbest proportions here either (woe is me etc.) but it does make you think.... nine years since the last biggy, a LOT has happened, most notably: A dog, a mortgage and a child (in that order). A business, start up to six staff to liquidation. Moving country, etc.

Am I where I thought I would be? NO siree.

Has it gone too quickly? YES, in a flash and in some ways painfully slowly.

Am I the same? YES, but I have way less tolerance.

Am I happier? Probably YES, as I know myself better.

Am I fatter? YES, I had a baby, everything changes. Am I as bothered? NO (aherm, she says, as she starts a fruit/veg detox for a few days to dispel the pot belly before the sequins.. so maybe that was a lie then.)

So, I would like some tips from the oracles that are fellow blog heads about growing old (dis) gracefully.
